This research aims to develop an empowerment model for self-care in patients affected by medical treatment and to examine the effects of self-care empowerment on the quality of life of these patients in Maha Sarakham Province. The study follows a four-phase action research approach. Scope of the Study The study focuses on patients who have suffered from medical treatment under the universal health coverage scheme, receiving healthcare services in Maha Sarakham Province. Eligible participants include those with chronic illnesses or conditions requiring continuous treatment, who voluntarily consent to participate in the research. The study is conducted from October 2023 to September 2024. Data Collection and Research Tools Data collection involves the use of the following research instruments: (1) Empowerment Process Model –adapted from Gibson’s empowerment concept and integrated with Orem’s self-care theory: Step 1: Recognizing and understanding the actual situation, Step 2: Critical reflection and evaluation, Step 3: Decision-making and selecting appropriate self-care actions, Step 4: Sustaining effective self-care practices
(2) Data Collection Tools – Including a personal information record form and the Thai version of the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life – Brief Version). Findings (1) Empowerment Model for Self-Care : The developed empowerment model consists of four steps and is implemented over eight weeks: Step 1: Recognizing and understanding the actual situation, Step 2: Critical reflection and evaluation, Step 3: Decision-making, selecting appropriate self-care actions, and taking action, Step 4: Sustaining effective self-care practices. (2) Effects of Empowerment in Self-Care on the Quality of Life of Patients Affected by Medical Treatment in Maha Sarakham Province.
A study on 12 patients affected by medical treatment in Maha Sarakham Province found that most had a good quality of life (Mean = 97.25, SD = 13.772). When considering specific aspects, the findings were as follows: 1) Physical health: Most patients had a moderate quality of life (Mean = 23.92, SD = 4.833). 2) Mental health : Most had a moderate quality of life (Mean = 22.75, SD = 3.279). 3) Social relationships: Most had a good quality of life (Mean = 12.17, SD = 1.946). 4) Environment: Most had a good quality of life (Mean = 31.00, SD = 5.135). In summary, the role of nurses in this sector requires a combination of knowledge, skills, and teamwork to ensure high-quality patient care and maximize benefits for service recipients.
