Abstract

Abstract

Background: Head injuries are a significant medical concern that can affect the brain, ranging from mild to severe levels. Without appropriate care, these injuries they may lead to serious complications or even death. This study aimed to compare and analyze care approaches for patients with mild and severe head injuries and propose improvements for care in community hospitals.

Objective: To study nursing care and referral processes for two patients with head injuries

Methods: The study examined nursing care and referral processes for two patients receiving treatment. Data was collected from patient medical records, interviews, and observations of patients and their families. The data were analyzed using the nursing process.

Results: One case involved a mild head injury, where care included wound suturing, administration of antibiotics and intravenous fluids, and appropriate monitoring without complications. In contrast, the severe head injury case required intubation and sedation to reduce brain swelling. Equipment and documentation for the patient transfer were fully prepared. However, issues such as incorrect assessments for patients with unclear histories and delays in patient referrals due to coordination limitations were identified. The patient with a severe injury was transferred to a higher-capacity hospital for appropriate treatment. Nursing care for head injury patients should not only focus on survival but also emphasize effective care during transfers to minimize disability and complications.
